What's the Difference Between the Klarus G20 and G20L?

It’s always exciting when a flashlight brand upgrades a beloved flashlight. We’re always excited to hear about all the new features and discover what the difference is between the original flashlight and the upgraded version. Sometimes the upgraded version is an entirely different flashlight while other times it just delivers more lumens, is more compact, or has a minor change. When picking between the original flashlight and the upgraded version, it can be frustrating trying to tally up all the differences. So today we thought we’d take some time and talk about the differences and similarities between the Klarus G20 and the Klarus G20L.

Previously we did a similar blog post where we talked about the difference between the Klarus XT11S and the XT11GT. You can check that out here. Klarus continues to upgrade their flashlights, giving them new and amazing features every time. So let’s get started on talking about the G20 and the G20L!

The LEDs and Interface of the Klarus G20 vs the Klarus G20L

To start with, the G20 and the G20L have different LEDs. The G20 features a CREE XHP70 N4 LED while the G20L is equipped with a CREE XHP70.2 P2 LED. Despite the different LEDs, both flashlights delivers 3000 lumens of power. Both flashlights also feature four brightness levels, a strobe, and an SOS mode. When it comes to the brightness levels, the runtimes and lumens are the same with both flashlights so you won’t see a lot of difference here.

Both flashlights also have a tail switch and a side switch that operate independently. In fact, the user interface is exactly the same with both the G20 and G20L. So if you like the G20 and how it operates then you know you’ll like the G20L.

Durable Flashlight Body Design

The most obvious difference between these two outdoor flashlights is the body design. While the G20 has a body design where the head is almost completely flush with the body of the flashlight, the G20L has more of a cone-shaped head. Due to the cone-shaped head of the G20L, it’s over an inch longer than the G20. So the G20 is less than 5 inches and the G20L is nearly 6 inches in length. The head of the G20 is a touch less than 1.5 inches and the head of the G20L is a bit less than 2 inches. The body size of both flashlights are nearly identical. So you’re definitely getting a larger flashlight with the G20L.

It’s important to note that the cone-shaped head on the G20L has its own advantages. Klarus was able to incorporate a brand new reflector design where the reflector is very deep into the head of the flashlight and has an orange peel texture. This gives you an amazing flood beam while also providing a spot light! Because of this reflector, the G20L has a maximum beam distance of 300 meters whereas the G20 has a max beam distance of 150 meters. So you get double the distance with the upgraded G20L! The G20 provides an amazing floodlight that can turn your entire backyard into daytime basically. With the G20L you get the best of both worlds by having a spotlight and flood light.

You can expect both of these outdoor flashlights to be prepared for any outdoor adventure you have in mind (except for scuba diving). Both flashlights are made with a high-quality aluminum alloy, have ITS output regulation, are waterproof and impact resistant. So both flashlights can take what nature has to give no matter how rugged.

Extra Flashlight Features

Well we covered all the differences between the Klarus G20 and G20L. We want to touch on some more similarities, however. Both flashlights are packed with features and it’s important to know what else they have to offer. First of all, both flashlights are USB rechargeable and come with a Klarus 26650 battery. These flashlights can only run on 26650 batteries. You can easily charge them while working on your computer or just plugging them into an outlet using a USB adapter. While they’re charging you can monitor their progress with the charging indicator located on the side switch. This indicator also functions as a battery capacity indicator to let you know the charge of your battery while you’re using the flashlight.

So there you have it! All in all, there aren’t too many differences between these two flashlights. I’d say the major differences would definitely be the size and the beam pattern. If you don’t care to have a spotlight and you like floodlights then the G20 is definitely for you. If you don’t want to compromise a spotlight for floodlight then the G20L is the flashlight for you! Either way, both flashlights are awesome and it comes down to what you need or want.
